Estuaries: Where Rivers Meet the Sea
The primary function of this website is to promote National Estuaries Day and to educate the public on the importance of estuaries and the need to protect them. Users may view local National Estuarine Research Reserve and National Estuary Program events, and Estuary Live, an interactive field trip through American estuaries presented over the Internet, which was the featured event for National Estuaries Day 2002. Participants toured 13 estuaries, learning about these dynamic coastal ecosystems, the different types of estuaries that can be found along the coasts, the plants and animals that call these habitats home, and the commercial and recreational importance of estuaries. Live segments were supplemented with pre-recorded footage. Footage is also available from 2000 trips. Also available are a history of the National Estuaries Day now observed in late September, a photographic gallery, and information on protection, resources, and national programs.
